Student Ministry Apprenticeship

SMAs

The SMA Scheme

We also have a second apprenticeship scheme at St Helen's, aimed particularly at recent graduates who've had less ministry experience. It's a one-year scheme designed to give people a taster of ministry and to equip them with tools for it. Each apprentice is linked to a member of the Bible-teaching staff. They will meet with them regularly and have the opportunity to observe and learn from the ministry of a more experienced Bible teacher.

There are three aspects to the Apprenticeship:

1) Training

Because the apprenticeship is aimed at those who've had less experience of ministry, our training has a particular focus on learning how to study the Bible and how to teach it to others. There's lots of opportunity to have a go at leading Bible studies and giving talks, and to learn from feedback and from listening to others.

2) Ministry

All Apprentices get to be involved in two areas of the ministry at St Helen's, giving them a broader grasp of the range of ministry that happens in a church. There's usually the opportunity to serve in the Student Ministry, lead a Bible study group, and work with students from one of the London universities. Second ministry areas can range from children and youth to international or music ministry.

3) Practical service

Apprentices serve practically in cleaning and setting up our buildings for meetings. It's a great way to serve the church family and to gain an insight into what's involved practically in running a church.
