The training method of ‘explain, demonstrate, practice and critique’ is recognised the world over. In John’s third, intensely personal letter, we see a perfect example of this. Gaius exemplifies how the truth works out in true love. Diotrephes is the antithesis. John wants us to imitate Gaius, and not Diotrephes. This brief letter provides a beautiful insight into the way the early church grew and some of the problems it faced.
