The New Testament letters are pockmarked with references to battle, military engagement, athletic endeavour and vigorous contesting. From the outset of his letter, Jude instructs his readers that they must contend. The word is lifted straight from the sports arena or the battle field. In the first 19 verses, Jude instructs his reader as to why they should contend. Finally, in verses 20—25, he tells them how to contend. Every disciple needs to view themselves as an athlete and a solider.
