Paul’s aim in 1 Timothy is to keep the church focussed on its mission to hold out the truth. But what happens when the church turns inwards? In this passage, he warns Timothy of the consequences: divergent doctrine produces diseased division that attracts depraved and discontented people who are destroyed by deadly desire.
